It helps them improve their reading skills in English and many other languages (Hindi, Bangla, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Spanish & Portuguese) by encouraging them to read aloud interesting stories and collect stars and badges together with "Diya", the friendly in-app assistant.
Google on Thursday launched the Read-Along Android app that will help children aged five and above learn to read. Early access to the app is now available in over 180 countries around the world. The new app is based on Bolo, a speech-based reading-tutor app launched in India by Google in March last year. Read-Along Speech Recognition technology is used to guide children as they read the text. The app (and Speak in India) is now available in nine languages including English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Google said that after receiving positive feedback from parents in India, Google has come up with a new name for the app for people across the world. In India, this app is known as Bolo. The company has also provided an in-app reading boy named Diya. Using text-to-speech and speech recognition technology, Diya checks to see if the student can read correctly. It also gives them verbal and visual feedback as they read the story. Learners can ask Diya for help at any time.
The app features several stories and intermediate games from around the world as well as badges to encourage children to learn more. Parents can also create multiple profiles for multiple learners to monitor individual progress.
In addition, Google noted that the company has taken care of the privacy and safety of children in this application. It states that the app works offline without the internet after downloading the app and stories. However, parents can download more stories via the Internet.
The company also says that Read Analysis sends voice data to the device instead of sending it to Google servers.
This is a move by Google which is focused on learning in the time of coronavirus crisis. The company had earlier started YouTube Learning to help students and teachers living at home due to the Kovid-19 epidemic. a
